The Shard

This remarkable building is the tallest in Europe and looks exactly like its name, a shard of glass. Although it is supposed to have truly remarkable views, the weather was such that it seemed unreasonable to pay the £60 pound tariff (for two) to get to the top only to look out at fog and cloud. However, if you want to see what it is like, just click here.

The Shard
From our ground view of the Shard, we wandered over to The Old Operating Theatre, Museum and Herb Garret. The Old Operating Theatre Museum is one of the most unusual museums in London. The Operating Theatre is the oldest in Europe and found in a unique space in the Herb Garret of St Thomas Church, and was part of old St Thomas Hospital.

Southark Cathedral
After wandering through Southark Borough Markets and stopping to admire Southark Cathedral, we caught a number 17 bus with the intention of going to Archway.  But the bus was on diversion as so many seem to be at the moment.  This is because of the largest infrastructure project in Europe which is designed to make public transport faster and more efficient.  It is due to be completed in 2018, so for five years chaos reigns on London streets.

We would up at St Pancras Station where we had lunch and admired the wonderful neo-Gothic St Pancras Hotel before returning to complete chores and packing ready for the next stage of our journey, Madrid.

  1. Was it the norm for there to be an audience in operating theatres?

  2. Of course. A practice still used in medical training.
