VE Day

No matter how many young men and women from Australia and the United States died fighting in World War II, it is difficult to fully understand the impact the war had on those countries which were  invaded.

VE Day or Victory in Europe Day celebrates 8 May 1945 when the World War II allies accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. In France this is a solemn holiday, flags flying and many shops closed.

In Paris, the centre of activity is the Arc de Triomphe and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  The Champs Elysee is crowded with people watching the military parade and the flyover of the French Air Force.

A wreath is placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which lies in the centre of the Arc de Triomphe; a reminder of just what price is paid for military triumph.

The Presidents of France and Poland prepare to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
