Fire

Recently there has been a spate of television reports about home fires and deaths caused by these.  Apparently there is no law requiring smoke alarms and many of the older houses and apartments are very much at risk, particularly those with fireplaces which were once used for heating and cooking.

Even in the apartment in which we are staying, there are two fireplaces which, fortunately, are inactive.  Not only are many of the old fireplaces an example of functional heating and cooking systems, many are also works of art.  Here, then, is a photograph of the fireplace in the living room of our Paris flat.
